ORDER
"Liverpool, late 1997, I’m in
my late 30’s and have a demo collection in excess of
200 songs, some of them I’ve recorded alone, some with
bands, some of them I remember with affection and some I’ve
totally forgotten, until now… I really ought to do something…"
And then there’s real life
"I’m a recovering divorcee mental
health professional with a
deep affection for all things Bukowski. The CSA are onto me
and I miss my children… you see if I hadn’t made
GONE everything before, every action, every reason, every
stupid mistake, every glittering success [glittering?], every
disaster, would all amount to nothing, would all have been
a waste of time. I had no choice. I had to do something…
"Most
of GONE was recorded over 6 days in Liverpool in
late 1997 with producer Rob Ferrier [Clinic, Space] at the
now defunct Pearl Studios. It features contributions from
long standing VP collaborators Neil Carter [drums], Nick Robinson
[bass] and a guest vocal from Jo Smullen.
Some of the songs
on GONE were already recorded. The now trademark VP number
Calm Me Down (1996) was being touted around the indie labels
and getting a better than average reaction . . . although
Vinny couldn’t understand why they weren’t biting
his hands off [nobody ever can). The acoustic
tracks Blood Honey and Gentle Life were recorded separately
in a solo acoustic session in early 1997. Rob Ferrier (all
the things technical to Vinny's all things musical/lyrical)
produced the record. GONE’s
subsequent release through BUGHOUSE [Liverpool indie label
now sadly defunct] was a personal catharsis for Vinny. It
didn't sell bucketloads (only 1000 pressed in total) but it
was a great start and we all need that, don't we?
